Peter R. Whitis, M.D. graduated from Berea College, Berea, KY and the first class of the College of Medicine at the University of Florida, Gainesville, FL. He was awarded a fellowship of Afghanistan in 1960. He served three years as a medical officer in the United States Navy. He had a 35-year career in child psychiatry and was published in medical journals as well as lay journals.

He attended summer workshops at the Iowa Writers' Conference, wrote a weekly newspaper column for two years on aerobics and running, received several awards for peace activism and met President Mikhail Gorbachev in the Kremlin. In 1985, Peter was awarded the Broad Street Pump Award from the Physicians for Social Responsibility "for outstanding contributions to the effort to prevent the last epidemic."

His previous publications, Beyond Running: The Road As Mentor and An American Life: A Memoir of Improbable Events, are available on Amazon. He and Martha wrote a 70 year love story.
