History and stories from the Chippewa bottoms. Caryville, Happy Island, Meridean, Fair Play, and Tyrone. Jim Alf moved to the ferry house by the Chippewa River at the age of 11 when his father won his first contract to run the Caryville Ferry. Jim began to run the ferry for the next year and did so for six seasons, helping after school and on weekends, including most of the Sunday afternoons. After being in the Air Force, driving for Marten Transport and Beusings, he retired in 1995. In 2002 he began giving presentations to civic groups about the ferries on the Chippewa River. He finally wrote a book about the history about that area, this is the result.
