Freebee was born in 1975. I was a student teacher naturalist working at San Mateo Outdoor Education School in California. In my spare time, I took up surfing.
However, surfing was too scary for me. The big ocean waves had a huge attitude. I discovered that the surfboard had a better purpose. It could carry me out beyond the surf where lots of different birds were hanging out. I began spending my time among the ducks and the grebes. It was as if I became one of them on my surfboard. It was here that Freebee cracked out of her shell and came to life in this book.
