Henry Hilfager, retired and recently widowed from the passing of his wife, Ruth, has a problem. A recurring dream about a woman from his college days is disrupting his sleep and reminding him of the lingering pain from never really knowing how she truly felt about him all those years ago. In an effort to find the answer and hopefully put an end to the dream, Henry decides to drive across the country from his home in New Haven, Connecticut to Eau Claire, Wisconsin and find the mystery woman -- the only problem is that he only knows her first name, and he has no idea of where she is now, over forty years later.
Henry's mentor and best friend, Arthur Preston, agrees to join him on the road trip. When Cecilia Rossi, Ruth's best friend, learns that the two old men and Arthur's niece are planning a cross-country trip, she reluctantly invites herself along to keep them safe, and Henry decides to keep the true purpose of the trip a secret from Cecilia.
In the course of their three days of driving, mystical and mysterious discoveries are made from the spoken and written words of Jimmy Steinke, Cecilia's former fiancé and Henry’s high school buddy from over forty years earlier. Jimmy always believed that he had the unique ability to read signs in the universe that showed him the course of future events. What begins as a simple road trip to find someone from the past evolves into a quest to find the answers to the curious predictions from over forty years in the past.
