On September 3, 1827, a Ho-Chunk delegation met units of U.S. Infantry at the Portage between the Fox and Wisconsin Rivers in what would become the State of Wisconsin. The events leading up to this moment have become known by many names: the Winnebago War, the Winnebago Disturbance, or the Red Bird War. This often-overlooked conflict brought about significant changes to the state of Wisconsin and foreshadowed a shift in American politics. This work investigates the people involved in the conflict, its causes, actions, and outcomes. Using primary sources whenever possible, "Hostile Measures" offers a unique perspective, one that comes from a child's point of view in the conflict. Original maps and illustrations are adapted to the text, which includes a guide to the sites of the 1827 Red Bird War.
